Jeanne Leonard delights with a summer kitchen

By Jeanne Leonard Going

When designing a weekend home I feel that the kitchen, breakfast area or dining room should have the best views and ample space. Most of us have more time to cook and entertain in a weekend home than a city apartment or suburban home and spend more time in the kitchen.
The kitchens of the 90's have so many more conveniences and are designed to be more than a cooking space. They have sound systems, wet bars and televisions making the kitchen an inviting space that families want to congregate in. The dining areas are larger, and the chairs, chandeliers and tables are more exciting than the old "kitchen tables." Most kitchen dining areas are used for informal entertaining, for four to eight guests and dining rooms used for more formal larger parties.

Back in the 70's and early 80's the trend was toward open kitchens with counters instead of walls separating the main rooms from the kitchens. Now the walls are back up and the kitchens are bigger so that the cook is not alone but with friends and family. Cooking concepts have also changed. Cooking in the 70's and 80's was more of a chore. Now the cooking is shared with other family members, and cooking has become more creative and challenging. Each plate is "decorated;" garnished with edible flowers and colorful sauces that are considered when planning the more health conscious menus of the 90's. All this has influenced our kitchen designs and we are finding the "Joy of Cooking.".
